Design Culture Now

Client: The Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum is hosting a fictional graphic design convention, inviting several esteemed artists to present their experiences.

Goal: Cooper-Hewitt wanted a poster around the city advertising the event’s topic and the many artists they’re featuring.

Approach: For the actual name of the convention, “Design Culture Now,” I wrote it in big, bold letters and added a giant shadow for depth. I also italicized and then put the words at an angle so the letters would look straight but be written diagonally. For the background, I went with a mosaic design. Splitting the backdrop into uneven shards and coloring them in various colors added a great pop of color. It also alluded to the digital design aspect of the convention itself, presenting the theme between the design and the word “design” right in front of it. Below, I emphasized the artist’s names with a large, bold font since that’s the main eye-catcher of that section. I organized the names in a list and placed their presentation times below each name. Finally, I added a simple text for the location and contact info. The museum's name is in a black bar at the top, and the address is in a white area at the bottom, which caps it off with a nice contrast.

Result: The Cooper-Hewitt Museum was given a poster that emphasizes all the important information at first glance and provides the finer details upon a closer glance, making it perfect for city-goers walking around the streets.

As an added piece, I extended the main design of the poster to create a souvenir sketchbook for the convention. Seeing how almost every participant in the event is going into the creative industry, a sketchbook is one of the most profitable opportunities for merchandise that can be offered.
