Nature’s Nomad

Client: For a school assignment, I had to create a fictional nature-based magazine.

Goal: The assignment entailed envisioning a fake magazine with a cover, table of contents, and three full-page spreads geared toward nature lovers and outdoorsmen.

Approach: For the cover, I based it on the magazines I usually see in the checkout lines at supermarkets. I had the title at the top, with the majority of the page teasing the contents through eye-catching subtitles and pictures. For the table of contents, I added the three pages I made for the magazine and a couple more that didn’t exist. I then gave it a darkened jungle backdrop with lighter text boxes to add contrast. I used certain corners of the pictures and title cards to emphasize a temple theme, seeing how it’s related to jungles. I used a stereotypical postcard design for the traveling page to emphasize the travel aspect. I framed every picture in a stamp frame and placed it on a parchment paper backdrop to look like a map. I had two identical text boxes for the biography with an image on opposite ends. This gave the text a non-uniform look, similar to most modern magazines. Finally, I placed every item in a borderless view for the catalog to maximize viewing. I still added a hierarchy between all the items' prominence on the page and the names, brands, and prices every catalog should have.

Result: The finished magazine is a large variety of design styles and subjects, all under the umbrella of the topic of nature.

To the left, I tried adding pages from the project for viewing convenience. Unfortunately, Squarespace is somewhat weird with PDFs and didn’t display correctly. It also doesn’t help that the images I got were too big to be added to the page at full quality. Fortunately, Squarespace allows me to add a button to the PDF itself! So, if you wish to see the project in its true quality, just use the button below.
